I would recommend keeping first dates low key, go for a coffee, meet at a bar for a few drinks (sometimes helps to calm the nerves down), anywhere basically where two people can have a descent conversation without having to yell, in the summer time.. even a nice walk in a park, beach or something...

We all know night time is usually the best time to meet up, more or less because some of us work the 9 - 5 deal, though first dates can or cannot end badly depending on how the two interact. Going for lunch allows for not only day time activities which grow in number daily as the sun shines brighter, but in the event the date is not going well, an easily and reliable excuse to depart.
